Marine Sergeant Load Out

Postby Inquisitor Pravious » Wed Dec 02, 2015 11:40 pm

So a simple question, that no doubt does not have a simple answer.

What equipment would you give to the Sergeants in the following squads?

1) 10 man Tactical Squad with Plasma Canon and Plasma Gun.

2) 10 man Tactical Squad with Melta Canon and Meltagun.

If you're really unhappy with their existing kit, I would say look at a Plasma Pistol, or maybe Combi-Plasma/Melta to match the rest of the unit.
How many Space Marines does it take to change a lightbulb?
None. Such is the work of the tech-priests.

If you're really unhappy with their existing kit,

Are you suggesting by the above that you wouldn't give the Sergeants any upgrades?

As these are for my Imperial Fists, I have traditionally (bit of fluff as well) given the Sergeants Power Fists. As the other Tactical Squads have Flamers and Missile Launchers then the Sergeants are more likely to see close combat. With a Plasma Gun as the special weapon the squad doesn't need to get as close so can happily sit back. If that is the case there is no point in paying for a Power Fist or any other close combat weapons.

I really hadn't thought of giving them no upgrades. I was thinking Storm Bolter for the Plasma Squad. The Melta squad would need to get in closer but maybe you are right, don't change his weapons.

Go with that then ;)

I think competitively, you would probably give them a combi weapon for that extra shot or leave them with no upgrades.

Considering I would choose to make this a pretty stable firing platform, I'd stick this lot somewhere in cover, and have the sergeant use either his own Stormbolter, or his Combi-Plasma. Kind of depends on whether I expect to play a lot of (Chaos) Space marines or other MEQ troops or not. The extra plasma shot, or shots when the range is right, might easily take out a MEQ or two, maybe even hit a Terminator where the invulnerable save don't shine (where the Inv.roll fails...)

With a squad like this, I would either go on a tank-hunt, or move onto an objective close near the enemy, and keep it firmly under control. For the tank-hunting squad, I guess my sergeant would get a Powerfist. A good, all-round, yet expensive weapon that utilises the extra attack from a veteran sergeant to oppose its Specialist Weapon rule. This would be an active agressive squad with which to close to range, and then start blasting away. For the objective-claiming squad, the sergeant would likely have a Combi-Melta to add just that extra shot of AP into a counter assault by the enemy.

As long as I don't have a specific use in my mind, I tend to kit out my sergeants with an equivalent weapon to the rest of the special and heavy weapons in the squad.

Of course, I magnetize most of my specials, heavies and characters nowadays, so I can swap when necessary.
The only dumb question is the one you never asked, for you will never have an answer to it.
