Cardiff GT 2016 - 9th Age - 20/21 February

Postby Viruk » Mon Nov 02, 2015 10:45 pm

Cardiff GT: 20/02/16 - 21/02/16

I am proud to announce the Cardiff GT 2016. This will be a 9th Age, 2 day singles, tournament run at Firestorm Games in Cardiff. There will be 5 games played uncomped. 9th Age is a community driven game system that is similar to 8th Edition Warhammer. Tweaks to the rules have been made and the game is better balanced. The rules are a lot clearer and the design team look and respond to feedback. For a lot of people, myself included, 9th Age is what they wanted GW to release after 8th Edition. The game is a mass combat game system. Hopefully will people give this game a try and see that it's like 8th Edition but better. Any questions about this then please let me know in this thread or in PM's.

Full details of the tournament can be found below, the rules for the game can be found in the 3rd post:

9TH AGE RULES:

9th Age is a game system that is very similar to 8th Edition but changes have been made to stop the game becoming stale. 8th edition was a great game in my opinion and I love to play it but with no rules coming out the game would become stale fairly soon (it already had a bit).

9th Age is bringing in new rules, writing new army books, new spells and new magic items. There will be constant updates similar to how GW released books for 8th Edition. New units will appear that aren't anything to do with GW. So the game won't get stale any time soon. They will be constantly looking to improve their game and making sure any loop holes are covered as soon as possible. Although they will be releasing updates they won't be releasing so many that it will be hard to follow.

Below you can find the main rules for the game as well as the army books. Some of the formatting on the army books hasn't been completed (look at Dark Elf book to see completed version and Lizardmen book to see non formatted book). The books will be formatted and ready in next few days. Although the rules won't change in there.

Any questions then please ask. There are a lot of myths and false information flying about regarding 9th Age, hopefully people can see that the game looks like it's been made with a lot of love and care and attention by gamers for gamers. I for one am really excited about the game as its 8th Edition (which I loved) but better, tighter and made for gamers.

MAIN RULES:
9th Age Main Rules v0.11.9.1
9th Age Magic Lores v0.11.2

Entrants list updated. 27 entrants so far with tickets gone on sale less then a day. Great response so far guys. Seems people are willing to give 9th Age a go which is great. Should be a fun weekend regardless! But nice to see people are still behind Warhammer even if it has been renamed and repackaged.

Any questions or any comments then please feel free to post.

Agreed Mo.

The books, even redone and in early versions, are better than 8th ever could have been.

Aside form the BRB getting a facelift, take a look at the armies you're familiar with and read what some of the new stuff does.

For example, Vampire Covenant:

Blood lines are back with insane synergies, marching corpse carts which can join zombie units, black coach's vampire can get awakened and begin to fight, and so much more. I haven't seen a lot of other books special rules, but I'd be interested to make what I'd consider a fun/tough list and hope to learn other books' synergies via my opponents' trickeries =D>

If it isn't as fun as I expect... well, there's still Cardiff at night!!

Entrants updated. Up to 34 now.

Been pointed out that this event clashes with an 8th Edition event in Yaxley called Remnants Of The Old World that a few people on the entrants list have already signed up to. So just be aware that the dates do clash if you've signed up for that event and this one.

With 9th being a community led thing, is there any chance of incorporating the (awesome) indy books by Matthias Elliason? (Nippon, Araby, etc)

Due to the lack of GW selling the 8th ed books, these indy ones are actually easier to get hold of. In addition he is working on a series of updates, and are very well balanced, if anything, a little underpowered.

After the promotion of it by Chris Tomlin in his Slaughtering Grounds campaign, and the freedom afforded by 9th, I think now is a great time to expand the hobby and range of armies availible.

TL:DR; Can I bring my Araby army?!

Could be very cool.

What did the 9th Age team say when you showed them these army books to include into The 9th Age game?

I didn't think it was such a dictatorial venture. I thought this was a grass roots thing where each TO set the boundaries for their own tournament. Or did we swap one shadowy group of all powerful deciders for another?

Nah man, it's just an uncomped 9th Age structured tournament, governed by 9th Age rules using 9th Age army books. Unless I'm mistaken of course.

What what the all powerful 9th committee says goes?

Or is it reasonable to ask a question for the consideration of the guy that is actually busting his hump to organise this four months before an event?

Hi,

Unfortunately won't be allowing that book. The main reason is with the rules changes of 9th Age the old book won't be in line with the rest of the books in terms of rules, game mechanics and terminology. This alone means it shouldn't be used. Then there is game balance and other stuff to consider which means the book doesn't match the goal that the 9th Age guys are trying to achieve. Each TO can allow the book if they really want but for this event specifically we will be just using the rules that the 9th Age guys have provided to see how they work between themselves.

Although it is a community driven project there are still 3 main guys that oversee it and bring all the books together (this is definitely needed in my opinion) to ensure that the whole project has a single goal and driving force.

But the 9th Age guys do listen to feedback from the community and if you want this book added to the "official" 9th Age army books you can speak to them on their forum and discuss their plans for new army books.
