Where do you take line of sight from?

Postby dreadlord » Fri Oct 23, 2015 10:38 pm

Hi all,

At my local club we are unsure where to draw line of sight from. It seems pretty simple but then again is slightly ambiguous in the rules. Obviously you take it from the unit leader point.

However does that mean that line of sight for the ULP literally just runs all the way to the edge of the units base, i.e. its 180 degree's. I might not be explaining myself here very well but no mention of any angle is made in the rules and if you take line of sight as a straight line from ULP to the edge of where any unit ends then it has to be 180 degrees.

BUT that then means that the ULP is actually pretty massive.

How is everyone else playing this?

Line of Sight, Front Arc.
Range, Leader Point (front center of unit)

So the front arc is literally 180 degree's from the front of the leaders base?

No, Here's the diagrams from the free version of the rules as that's probably allowed to be posted.

First, we’ll assume that your unit can only
see things that are at least partially in its
front arc – its ‘arc of sight’. The flank and
rear arcs are completely blind.

So you draw a line from the ULP to the target, if it's not in the front arc, then you can't see it. So definitely not 180 degrees.

You only see stuff that you can draw an unbroken line to, from your ULP.
The line can be drawn sharper than 45 degrees out from the side of your ULP, but you cannot see something that is not in the units front arc.
In summary, for something to be seen, it must:
1) be in the units arc of sight /front arc
2) be able to be hit by a line from the ULP

thats my take on it..

edit: I think Gojira basically said the exact same thing

I finally see how it works. The proverbial penny has dropped, I'm not fast but I get there in the end, as the vicar said to the nun.

It's a combination of 2 elements.

Firstly, ULP, establish it has line of sight as laid out in rules.

Secondly, position of the target units arc of visibilty as compared to the ULP. (Decides where chargers align, front, rear etc).

There isn't an arc of visibility for the ULP, as long as he can see the enemy unit and once the charge is complete his unit can actually complete the charge against the correct arc of the target.

It's rather elegant when it comes down to it. Nice game design I must say..
